A Cytotoxic, Co-operative Interaction Between Energy Deprivation and Glutamate Release From System x\u3csub\u3ec\u3c/sub\u3e\u3csup\u3eâ\u3c/sup\u3e Mediates Aglycemic Neuronal Cell Death
The astrocyte cystine/glutamate antiporter (system xcâ) contributes substantially to the excitotoxic neuronal cell death facilitated by glucose deprivation. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanism by which this occurred. Using pure astrocyte cultures, as well as, mixed cortical cell cultures containing both neurons and astrocytes, we found that neither an enhancement in system xcâ expression nor activity underlies the excitotoxic effects of aglycemia. In addition, using three separate bioassays, we demonstrate no change in the ability of glucose-deprived astrocytesâeither cultured alone or with neuronsâto remove glutamate from the extracellular space. Instead, we demonstrate that glucose-deprived cultures are 2 to 3 times more sensitive to the killing effects of glutamate or N-methyl-D-aspartate when compared with their glucose-containing controls. Hence, our results are consistent with the weak excitotoxic hypothesis such that a bioenergetic deficiency, which is measureable in our mixed but not astrocyte cultures, allows normally innocuous concentrations of glutamate to become excitotoxic. Adding to the burgeoning literature detailing the contribution of astrocytes to neuronal injury, we conclude that under our experimental paradigm, a cytotoxic, co-operative interaction between energy deprivation and glutamate release from astrocyte system xcâ mediates aglycemic neuronal cell death
Structural Health Monitoring from the Window Seat of a Passenger Airplane
Recent advances in computer vision and graphics have shown that regular, monocular cameras and video (e.g. cell phone cameras and Digital SLRs) can be used to identify the resonant frequencies of structures, and even image visually subtle operational deflection shapes. This paper is offered as a teaser for that work, focusing specifically on an example that may be of interest to people in the structural health monitoring (SHM) community. The discussion is high-level, and presented in an intentionally casual tone (much of the paper presents an anecdote-about recovering the operational deflection shape of an airplane wing using a cell phone and a dish sponge-using the first person). Our hope is to make this text as accessible and painless to read as possible, with hopes of introducing readers from different engineering disciplines to our related work in computer vision and graphics
EMI Resulting from a Signal Via Transition Through DC Power Bus-Effectiveness of Focal SMT Decoupling
Signal vias are commonly used in multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) design. For a signal via transitioning through the internal power and ground planes, the return current has to jump from one reference plane to another reference plane. The discontinuity of the return current at the via excites the power and ground planes, and results in power bus noise, and can produce an EMI problem as well. Numerical methods, such as finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), moment methods (MoM), and partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC), were employed herein to study this problem. The modeled results were supported by the measurements. In addition, the EMI mitigation approach of adding decoupling capacitors was investigated with the FDTD method
Modeling EMI Resulting from a Signal Via Transition Through Power/Ground Layers
Signal transitioning through layers on vias are very common in multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design. For a signal via transitioning through the internal power and ground planes, the return current must switch from one reference plane to another reference plane. The discontinuity of the return current at the via excites the power and ground planes, and results in noise on the power bus that can lead to signal integrity, as well as EMI problems. Numerical methods, such as the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), Moment of Methods (MoM), and partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method, were employed herein to study this problem. The modeled results are supported by measurements. In addition, a common EMI mitigation approach of adding a decoupling capacitor was investigated with the FDTD method
The Large and Small Scale Structures of Dust in the Star-Forming Perseus Molecular Cloud
We present an analysis of ~3.5 square degrees of submillimetre continuum and
extinction data of the Perseus molecular cloud. We identify 58 clumps in the
submillimetre map and we identify 39 structures (`cores') and 11 associations
of structures (`super cores') in the extinction map. The cumulative mass
distributions of the submillimetre clumps and extinction cores have steep
slopes (alpha ~ 2 and 1.5 - 2 respectively), steeper than the Salpeter IMF
(alpha = 1.35), while the distribution of extinction super cores has a shallow
slope (alpha ~ 1). Most of the submillimetre clumps are well fit by stable
Bonnor-Ebert spheres with 10K < T < 19K and 5.5 < log_10(P_ext/k) < 6.0. The
clumps are found only in the highest column density regions (A_V > 5 - 7 mag),
although Bonnor-Ebert models suggest that we should have been able to detect
them at lower column densities if they exist. These observations provide a
stronger case for an extinction threshold than that found in analysis of less
sensitive observations of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. The relationship
between submillimetre clumps and their parent extinction core has been
analyzed. The submillimetre clumps tend to lie offset from the larger
extinction peaks, suggesting the clumps formed via an external triggering
event, consistent with previous observations.Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Astrophysical Journal slight

Implementation of outpatient total joint arthroplasty in canada: Where we are and where we need to go
© 2020 Zomar et al. Total joint arthroplasties (TJA) are successful procedures for the treatment of end-stage hip and knee arthritis. Length of stay in hospitals after these procedures has been steadily decreasing over time, with outpatient procedures (discharge on the same day as surgery) introduced in the US within the last 20 years. Reducing length of stay after TJA can provide cost savings. Centres in Canada have started to utilize outpatient TJA procedures, but we have identified some barriers that may have limited their implementation. We have summarized the current literature for outpatient TJA and discussed potential solutions for the current barriers
Grain Sorghum (Milo) Production in Kentucky
Grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) (Figure 1) can be used for a variety of purposes including animal feed, unleavened breads, cakes, wallboard, starch, dextrose, brooms, ethanol, high quality wax, and alcoholic beverages. Grain sorghum produced in Kentucky is most commonly used for animal feed and was first grown here in the 1920s. Although acreage in Kentucky has fluctuated considerably over the years, yields have generally exceeded the national average since the 1970s (Figure 2), indicating that grain sorghum is an option for producers interested in diversifying grain crop operations
